Codes and hacking

Codes

Neversoft has built a series of codes into the game which do useful and silly things. All of them work more or less the same way: while playing the game, pause during a skate session -- free skate, single session, career mode, two-player, it doesn't matter -- and hold down the L1 button while you press the buttons for the cheat you'd like to activate. Each letter stands for a button as follows:

N64 codes are noted under PSX codes where available.

After entering any code (except the Private Carrera code), the pause menu will shake to indicate that the code has been recognised. Most codes will take effect as soon as you continue the game.

Big head mode: SCULL

With this code on, all of your skaters will have huge oversized heads. This is absolutely useless, but rather funny.

All stats 10: STUD


N64: C-Up, C-Left, Left, Up, C-Down

When this code is enabled, your skater will have stats of 10 in all areas. This is a mixed blessing, as this code locks your stats at ten even when your special meter is full -- normally, your stats receive a +3 bonus when the special meter is full, but with this code enabled that bonus is not provided. The screen will display four small 10s in the lower right to indicate that this code is on.

All stats 13: XSSTUD


N64: C-Up, C-Left, Left, Up, Down

When this code is enabled, your skater will have stats of 13 in all areas, as if he had stats of ten and his special meter full. This code also does not allow the special meter to provide a +3 bonus, but of course, it's also giving you that bonus already. The screen will display four small 13s in the lower right to indicate that this code is on.

Special always on: XTCDUR

With this code entered, your special meter is always full -- allowing you to do your specials at any time, and providing you the aforementioned +3 bonus if you do not have either of the stat cheats enabled.

Slow Motion: SLUSL


N64: Down, Down, C-Up, C-Right, Left

This mode is good for practicing, as it slows down the game to about 1/4 speed. After using this mode for a few hours, many players find themselves better able to land grinds and spins at normal speed. Another side effect is that when you spin a trick coming off of a flat surface or kicker ramp, your spins are not slowed... so you can achieve huge spins with this code.

Restart options: SCXUD


N64: C-Left, C-Right, C-Down, Up, Down

Upon entering this code, a "skip to restart" option will appear on your pause menu. When you select this option, it will give you several options to restart the level at different places; on most levels, this will include the 2P starts and the horse trick positions. Some levels don't give you many options, and it is distressingly common after selecting one start or another to lose the rest of the restart menu if you go back to it.

All levels: TRUSTLUST

When this code is entered, you can play any of the levels with any of the skaters even though the level has not yet been unlocked. While the levels still appear unavailable, they may be selected at the level select screen regardless.

All tapes: CRUDCRUST


N64: C-Right, Left, Up, C-Up, C-Up, Right, Down, Up

This code will give all of your skaters fifty tapes and three gold medals. This is the ONLY code which is saved to the memory card if you save your game while it is on. There is no way to get fifty tapes other than with this code, and the extra tapes do NOT mean there are secret levels. This code takes effect only when you "end run" and "quit" with the current skater.

Private Carrera: TUTUCULT


N64: C-Left, C-Down, C-Right, C-Down, Up, Right, Left

When you enter this code, Officer Dick turns into Private Carrera, a new skater. She has all the same tapes as you have earned with Officer Dick, and any tapes you earn with her will belong to Officer Dick the next time you play. If you have not earned Officer Dick by getting all thirty tapes when this code is entered, earning thirty tapes will unlock Private Carrera instead of Officer Dick. This code takes effect only when you "end run" and "quit" with the current skater.

N64 Only Codes

Edge Of Reality has been so good as to give N64 users some cool codes PSX users don't get. They can suffer. Some of these are really cool.

Fast motion: Right, Up, Down, Down, Up, Down

Like the slow motion code, except it's FAST motion. No kidding. Try it; it makes the level a good deal tougher.

Perfect balance: C-Up, C-Right, Left, C-Right, Right, Up, Down

No need to balance on grinds. PSX users whined about wanting this code for months.

Fast grabs: C-Up, Left, C-Down, C-Down, Up, Down, Right

When this code is entered, your grabs will spin the counter a lot faster when held.

10x Points: Down, Right, Up, Right, Up, Left, C-Left

Easy enough to figure. Enter this code, and your base trick points will be multiplied by ten.

High Speed: C-Up, Left, C-Down, C-Down, Up, Down, Right

Increases your speed. Simple.

The following cheats may have annoying side effects, as whoever made them
has used "signature" values. With this infinite time cheat, for example, you

RESET SKATERS TO STARTING STATS (NTSC on left, PAL on right)

Entering these codes will reset any or all of the skaters to 
no tapes and no medals. You should turn these codes off after 
entering them, either by disabling them in your Game Shark or
by saving the game and resetting the PlayStation.

Hacker basics

PlayStation hardware

Obviously, you will need the PlayStation hardware for this. The PlayStation comes in several models, including the 5000, 7000, and 9000 series. On the back of the 5000 and 7000 series PlayStation, there is a parallel port (not the same as a PC parallel port) where you can plug various interesting things. On the 9000 series PlayStation, there is no parallel port, but there is a serial port (once again, not the same as a PC serial port) which the 5000 and 7000 also have.

In order to do any sort of hacking at all on the PlayStation, you'll need some sort of development environment. That means a Game Shark PRO or CDX, in most cases; the Pro Action Replay or Xploder cartridge is just as good, and fundamentally the same. If you have an older Game Shark or Pro Action Replay, you will probably need to buy a new one unless you'd rather spend $60 or more on a special card to plug into your computer -- older systems use weird protocols that require special handling.

Game Shark codes

A Game Shark code consists of three parts: the OPERATION, the ADDRESS, and the VALUE. By far, the most common operations (and the only ones I will be working with here) are 80 and 30. The address can be anything within game memory, from 000000 to 1FFFFF. The value can range from 0000 to 00FF with a 30 operation, and from 0000 to FFFF with an 80 operation.

What these codes do is actually a lot simpler than you probably expect. Everything your PlayStation games do is based on what it has stored in memory; the Game Shark codes just change what the game has at different parts of its memory. In other words, the code 80123456 ABCD just makes sure that memory location 123456 always contains the value ABCD. This won't do anything special, unless the game is using memory location 123456 for something... like your health, or lives, or score. If your game is using that location for health, it can't take your health away -- because you ALWAYS have however much health you've set with the Game Shark. If it's using it for lives, you can never lose lives... you may die, but you won't lose a life.

The hacking part comes in when you want to know what useful things you can change in memory. What this requires is a knowledge of hexadecimal notation, a basic understanding of logic, and a general idea of what you're looking for.

Hooking up your PC

While you can hack games without hooking your PC into the PlayStation, I wouldn't recommend it. It's tedious. If you're serious about hacking, you'll want to get the proper cable to hook your PC up to the PlayStation -- which is a simple 25-pin serial extension cable for most recent cheat cartridges that plug into the back of your PlayStation, and a special "SharkLink" cable for the Game Shark CDX. Both cost about the same, between $5 and $15 USD depending on where you get it and what level of quality it is.

(If you have a Mac, you're out of luck. Nobody makes PlayStation hacking software for the Mac. I strongly suggest that anyone who has a Mac and wants to hack the PlayStation send nasty mail to every cheat cartridge manufacturer on the planet, because this is just not right.)

In any case, the cable just plugs into your PC on one end and your PlayStation on the other. The PlayStation end will have a plug that only fits in one place -- either the serial port, or a port on the side of the cartridge itself. The PC end will either be a socket (with many little holes) that goes into your serial port, or a plug (with many little pins) that goes into your parallel port.

Chances are high that you'll already have something plugged into the port this cable fits into. Unfortunately, how to reconfigure your hardware so you have something to plug the cable into is beyond the scope of this tutorial, because it's different for every system. If it's a serial port, and you still have the other serial port free but it's a different size, you can get an adapter at your local electronics store which will convert it to the right size. Take the cable with you to make sure you get the right kind. If it's a parallel port, you can get a parallel port switch at most electronics stores which will let you switch from one of the devices (usually your printer) to the other. Anything more complex will require outside assistance from someone who knows a lot about computers and can physically come to your house and look at what you need to do.

CD Contents

If you put the game CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive, you can see the various files on the CD. These files can in many cases be copied to your hard drive and viewed with file editors there. If your PlayStation has a "mod chip" installed, you can conceivably burn a new CD with modified files on it for use in your PlayStation.

IMPORTANT LEGAL NOTICE: It is illegal under Title 17 USC sections 501 and 506 to distribute modified or unmodified copies of game CDs to other people. International users fall under the jurisdiction of the Berne convention, which similarly prohibits such activity. While you may legally make as many copies of the game as you like (modified or unmodified) for your own use under the laws of most countries (as per the Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 for US residents), distribution of such copies to others is punishable by severe civil and criminal penalties -- Americans face as much as five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Bottom line, don't do it.

STR files

These files contain the music and skater videos for the game. These files are CD-XA data, and cannot be copied like normal files; you will need a CD-XA "ripper" to get these onto your hard disk, and there's not much you can do with them once they're there, but if you intend to burn a new CD you will need to make sure these files make it on there.

SYSTEM.CNF

This is the system configuration for the PlayStation, much like an AUTORUN.CFG file for Windows CDs. There is very little you can do with this file, as it primarily sets up the environment for the PlayStation (executable file, translation lookaside buffers, event configuration, stack location).

The SLUS file

This file is the executable code for the game, just like a Windows EXE file. Since it is a PlayStation executable, it is a MIPS R3000 binary, and cannot be executed on an Intel processor. There is a great deal of game data stored in this file, which could be modified and reburned to the CD.

CD.HED and CD.WAD

Those who remember hacking id Software's DOOM will recognise this method of file storage. The PlayStation has certain limitations on open files and the number of files in a directory; to cut down on the number of open files, many game companies will create a proprietary database format which will allow them to open only one or two files and use them to recover data rapidly from the CD. These files are just such a strategy, with CD.HED including the file names, locations, and sizes within CD.WAD; the free utility WADSPLIT will expand these files into their component data for further examination. As of this writing, there is no utility to put the WAD file back together with modified data.

The CD.WAD file contains several other files, which are detailed more below.

BMP files

These are board graphics and game screens, in standard Windows/OS2 bitmap format.

FNT files

These are in-game fonts for text display.

PRE files

PRE files are another form of database format, less efficient than the HED/WAD pair used for the CD as a whole. These files are also expanded into their components by WADSPLIT, and placed into separate directories for reference.

PSX files

These are evidently 3D model data, including all of the objects for the levels, all of the animations for the skaters, and all of the textures that provide them with their realistic appearance. Little is known about the format, but it is known that the models were originally produced using 3DStudio MAX.

REC files

These are the recorded demos shown while the game sits around doing nothing and you argue with your friends about who gets to play next. Once again, little is known about the format.

TXT files

These are just plain text. You can open, read, and edit them in Notepad if you like.

TRG files

These files contain information about which transfers are in which levels and where they are located.

VAB files

VAB files are PlayStation sound source data, literally archives containing VAG format sound data, which in turn is a compressed raw sound format unique to the PlayStation. Utilities are available here which will extract the VAG files from the VAB archives, and (using information determined from THPS specifically) convert VAG files to WAV. The documentation on both utilities is sparse, but they work reasonably simply; just use "VAB2VAG (file)" to extract and then "UNVAG (file)" for each resulting VAG to do the conversion. These two utilities are the product of the PSX development community more than me (I only did the PCM->WAV conversion of the UNVAG program's output), as I haven't done too well at writing a working VAB/VAG/WAV converter just yet.

ZLB file

We know absolutely nothing about this file.

At offset A44FC (PAL: A4658) in the PSX memory, you can find a bunch of skater data. Most of these data fields are pointers to text for the skater and equipment selection screens.

NOTE: Private Carrera's specials are copied up into the area where Officer Dick's specials are after entering the "super code". This gets pretty complicated if you use the Game Shark version of Private Carrera. ;)

COMBO INFORMATION: Every special move has a skater ID and button combo. I think the way this ends up working is that whenever you press a button combo, it looks for the skater ID you're using in the table, then matches your combo to a trick -- no match, no trick.

You can change the button combos however you like, and even improve the gameplay this way. Special grinds are much easier to land repeatedly if they don't use the left and right buttons, for example.

In order for a trick to be a grind, it has to use the grind button. You can't give someone a grind on the flip or grab buttons, unless you want it to be an air trick.

FLAG INFORMATION: what all the flags mean... there are four hex digits in each flag set. The first digit is always 0, and the rest mean various things. The digits labeled "FLAG 1" and "FLAG 2" can be added up together, so "handplant and no tweak" for flag 1 would be 4 + 2 = 6. You can probably also add up button combos -- Up + left at the same time would be 1 + 4 = 5. I wouldn't do this, myself.

So let's say you don't like not being able to spin and tweak backflips. Looking at the above information, you note that all you have to do is subtract 4 from flag 1 and 1 from flag 2. So you look up Geoff Rowley's backflip, and you see that the flags for it are 0410. This is easy enough, you just need to zero it out; so you look at the offset -- A7B98 NTSC, A7CF4 PAL -- and then check the offset table for the record up top to see that Flags are offset + 02. Adding 2 to the above offsets, we figure out that what we need is to put a 0000 in locations A7B9A (NTSC) or A7CF6 (PAL). Since we're modifying two bytes, we use an 80 code, and we get:

The same process will work for pretty much any character's special moves. You can do some weird things, too; if you clear the "Handplant" flag from the Burntwist, it becomes a really strange looking grind.

Trick text

I've organised the tricks here according to how you do them -- ollie, flip, grab, or grind button. So the handplant and wall ride are under grinds even though they aren't really grinds, the kickflip to indy and finger flip are under flips even though they're more like grabs (you can even hold them for more points like grabs), and the car plant is under ollies even though it's more like a transfer than a trick (because "car plant" isn't blue text, so it's obviously not really a transfer).

Unusual tricks

Some of these tricks don't exist anymore. Others are modifiers, not tricks; the last two text entries in the table are what gets stuck between your rotations and your first trick depending on whether you are skating "switch" or "normal". About the funniest thing I could do with these is make them "YOUR " and "MY " respectively (note the MANDATORY space after each string) -- so I was going around whipping out tricks like "360 YOUR MADONNA" and "540 MY BENIHANA". These generally end up sounding pretty obscene, which I find terribly amusing.

Transfer records

Transfer records are just now being reverse-engineered, but here's what I have so far.

At offset A8258 (PAL: A83B4) extending to A8788 (PAL: A88E4) you will find a whole buttload of eight-byte records covering how transfers work. Each transfer has the following information:

The way a transfer works is for the level to recognise that you just did a transition grind, worth 400 points. The level tells the game engine that you did transfer 0x5210, and the game engine plays a clickety noise and looks that up. It finds that transition 0x5210 is worth 400 points, and adds that to your score. It then finds the text offset 800A0C4C, and looks that up to find "[TRANSITION GRIND]" which it displays on the screen. While I could write up a big table of transfer record contents, I'll do that later, because right now I'm busy looking at the TRG files on the CD to see exactly how the level knows when you've done a transfer.

Just like specials, you'll see that putting your text in [] brackets makes it blue. There is one transfer with only an opening bracket, so maybe just STARTING your text with { or [ will give you the proper color. It's not very clean or tidy, though; I detest unmatched brackets.

I would like to be particularly hedgy about the different phrasings of "rail to rail" in the following list; I haven't had time to verify that I've got all the right levels matched with the appropriate rail to rail transfer phrasing. If you find one to be in error, please let me know. I may also have the fountain gaps mixed up.

To my knowledge, no one has ever gotten these transfers. It is suspected that the three gaps on top are in Phoenix, the "Freakin Pool Grind" is in Roswell, the "Hawk Bridge Grind" is in Burnside, and "Are You Kidding" is in San Francisco. None of the above is known for certain. Those who are paying attention and have been trying to get all the transfers will notice the conspicuous absence of any "Insane Rail To Rail Combo" anywhere, and in fact the complete lack of the word "Insane" in or around any of the transfers.
